Brighton vs Tottenham Preview

Brighton take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend.

After last week’s defeat to the cherries, Brighton are looking to bounce back against a new look Tottenham side, with the appointment of Thomas Frank from Brentford bearing fruit for Spurs so far.

What can we expect from this clash with the Europa League holders?

With just two defeats at home in the league in 2025, and just three defeats at the Amex in nineteen games last season, Brighton are yet to be beaten by a traditional big six side under Fabian Hürzeler at home.

Hürzeler spoke about the Bournemouth game and how Brighton can improve:

“I think we lacked a little bit of intensity, we lacked compactness between our midfield and our strikers and our defence, so the distances between each other were too big.

“We didn’t play our game, only in some phases of the game.”

In regards to team news, Mats Wieffer and Diego Gomez are available after missing last week’s trip along the south coast, whilst Jack Hinshelwood faces time on the sidelines with an ankle ligament injury that forced him off just minutes into the game last time out.

Maxim De Cuyper may be available after a knock forced him off too, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him miss out as a precaution.

This would pave the way for a first league start for Ferdi Kadioğlu since scoring against Liverpool last season.

It’ll also be interesting to see what is made of the midfield, given Carlos Baleba has struggled for form at the start of the season, and no consistent midfield pairing being established.

The TalkSeagulls Predicted Lineup:

GK: Verbruggen

LB: Kadioğlu

CB: Dunk

CB: van Hecke

RB: Wieffer

DM: Ayari

CM: Gomez

LW: Mitoma

AM: Rutter

RW: Minteh

ST: Welbeck

As for our North London Visitors…

It has been all change for Tottenham this summer, with Daniel Levy recently leaving his role as executive chairman.

Spurs spent over £180m this summer, most notably bringing in Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus (former Brighton target) from RB Leipzig and West Ham respectively.

João Palhinha and Randal Kolo Muani have also joined on loan, addressing big holes in their attack and defence left by previous misspending.

Tottenham are looking to forge a new identity of being compact and hard to defeat, which is quite the U-turn from Postecoglou’s regime. Brighton scored seven goals against Spurs last season, but don’t expect it to be a similar story.

Brentford under Frank took three draws and two wins against Brighton, with a fairly even head to head, but his side typically frustrated Brighton outside of two heavy scoring outliers between them.

Hürzeler said when asked about Tottenham:

“They play with a good energy and have a good intensity, most of the time they come man to man.

“Overall they seem to be in a good place, they seem to be very compact and have a good energy in their team, so it will be a big challenge for us.”

The last five fixtures between the two sides have seen both teams score, with three wins to us and two wins for them and 22 goals between us, so it shouldn’t be boring.

Prediction:

Spurs are in a better place than they have been for a while, but our home form is starting to become a bit of an inevitability.

Brighton 2-1 Tottenham, Minteh, Mitoma, Kudus.
